Hello,

This is Kwee Lim, the guy in the skin-coloured singlet. If you don't know what i am talking about, have a look at the camp photos in the previous postings :)

I am the Head of SNS, Sports and Social Committee under ENS. ENS Camp is just one of the many activities that SNS spearheads. Other activities include regular get-togethers such as dinners, kopi-drinking sessions in Arts canteen and chalet. SNS also organised a night cycling session in Feb 05.

Chalet
We held our chalet at Downtown East, Pasir Ris, from 29 Dec to 31 Dec 2004. We had lots of non-stop laughter and fun. Of course there is the regular BBQ, cards, PlayStation and supper at Changi Village. Wild Wild Wet is also one of the many stuff we did.

Night Cycling
Date: 26 Feb 2005
Mission: 21 young and vibrant souls went on an overnight cycling trip.
Objective: To travel from East Coast Park to Changi Village, then to Lau Pa Sat.
After Lau Pau Sat, return to the final checkpoint: MacDonald’s at East Coast Park.
Secondary objective: To eat all the good food along the way.

(Sadzzz. we had no photos of that night. The camera was KIA during the mission)

The night cycling was not confined to ENS members; it was opened to everyone in NUS. Don’t be mistaken that the society is about academic nor is it closed-doors. You may be surprised that most of our activities are non-academic related and the outreach is vast.

Kena arrow-ed by our dept to write something on our camp for their ECONews publication. Was in a crazy, nutzy mood becoz of my internship, so initially wanted to write a nonsensical, tongue-in-cheek essay before being reminded by our dear mr president that it will be read by profs... so decided to write it pretty formal, until the tail of the cynical devil in me began to show itself...

anyway, here's the write-up:
INFINITE HORIZON may not be your typical theme for an orientation camp, but for the Economics Society’s (ENS) camp this year, it represents the unlimited opportunities university life can offer to boarden our horizons. And as a first point of contact with university life for the freshmen, the camp takes on the role of presenting the range of opportunities to the first-year participants.

The three-day camp ran from 29th June to 1st July. Though short, the camp period was enough for all to find new friends and have lots of fun.

The camp started with a series of icebreaking games. A must-have feature in all orientation camps, the icebreakers are essential as they initiate new bonds of friendship among the participants that will prove valuable in their university life.

The first real highlight of the camp came soon after with a race around the school campus. Called NUS: An Amazin’ Place, the race was a remake of a wildly popular American race-cum-TV reality show of a similar name, but with the aim of introducing the various locations and facilities in NUS. Not only did the freshmen get to know NUS better, but they also learnt, from the current students tagging along, a few hidden shortcuts and some of NUS’s best-kept secrets.

The day ended, but not before a round of wacky night activities, in which the guys and gals put on each other’s makeup and the participants were treated to a scary water slide. The additional details shall only be kept in the memory of the participants.

The Machos and the Marys
It was then time to get hot, wet and sweaty for the next two days as we headed down to Sentosa’s sunny, sandy beaches. When it came to the sporty beach games, the hunks and babes that we were – and still are - were not afraid of strutting our stuff. At the same time, we showed a fierce but friendly competitive spirit befitting of a striving NUS student while having loads of fun! Even the weather could not douse our spirit as we continued playing in the mid-afternoon drizzle.
Race ya to the finish line!
(didn't have the brain juice to think of a better caption; besides, readers won't know where the 2 guys were running to...)

The afternoon gave way to a cool evening and we started with an item that would have been called Fright Night in other camps. But we gave it a better name - Confidence Walk - for it was to be a confidence-building exercise. The participants were led into a long and unlit bicycle trail in pairs. But that was just the appetizer for them before the main course – a walk through a “haunted house”. The camp organizers dressed up as ghosts and stood ready in the dark house to scare the participants, but they were faced with a happy problem when the participants were apparently not spooked out, for it meant the confidence-building walk had succeeded.

The third and last day began with another series of beach games. This time, the weather was extremely fine and we finally got to have a chance to get that well-deserved tan. We played several team games, such as captain’s ball and handicapped soccer. All these games aimed to promote teamwork and camaraderie among the participants.

As the orange sun set against the horizon between the sky and the sea, the camp was brought to a memorable end with a big thank-you buffet for everyone.

(had to clip the pic on the left, coz it's not nice having the side view of a girl's, er, behind jutting out at the edge of a picture. sorry willie!)

END of write-up. If you haven't known by now, the pics have been edited. Prezzies to those who can tell me where I've worked my photoshop magic.
