Next up is my v short intro of e Advertising & Marketing committee(A&M) of ENS

drumroll please....

A&M is in charge of advertising & marketing as its name suggests. The advertising side of A&M mainly applies to promoting ENS to the student population of NUS while the marketing side of A&M looks at sourcing for sponsorships for ENS to support the various activities ENS conducts throughout the year. Listed below are the various activities A&M busies itself with throughout the year.

  1. Sourcing of Sponsorships

Cold calling of companies was done before letters of request for sponsorship were sent out to different firms. The range of companies called up includes firms in telecommunications, health and beauty, F & B, banking, retailing and insurance sectors.

Hence this job is strongly recommended for people who love to cook telephone porridge(aka talk on the phone).

Why you should take up the challenge:You will get to know people from all sectors of economy in Singapore and you get to talk alot on the phone.

Plus, you will learn how to bargain for bargains and you might meet up with someone who's pretty or handsome when you meet up with your sponsors(too bad i wasn't so lucky...)

I think it is appropriate here for me to just thank and acknowledge our generous sponsors for their kind sponsorships....

a) Magazines Express Pte Ltd

Kindly sponsored 100 past-dated copies of Newsweek and 100 past-dated copies of Forbes.

b) MobileOne Ltd

Kindly sponsored 100 pieces of plastic carriers.

c) Yeo’s

Kindly sponsored 600 cans of Sparkling H-TWO-O Apple Isotonic Drink, 60 bottles of 1.5L Bubble Green Tea + Apple Justea and 60 bottles of 1.5L Bubble Green Tea +Apple Justea.

d) Public Utilities Board

Kindly sponsored 72 bottles of Newater.

e) Spectacle Hut

Kindly sponsored 100 pieces of $30 vouchers.

2. Packing of goodie bags

After securing the numerous products from different companies, it is time to put the products to good use(unfortunately, not for my own private consumption...) by packing them into goodie bags to be distributed out for various events organised by ENS.

Why you should take up the challenge:This is actually quite a fun activity despite the fact that it doesn't sound fun... and this is a good activity for people who like to pack things!

3.Annual Bazaar

Basically all committees of ENS take part in the annual bazaar by getting products from vendors and selling the products in the bazaar. A & M invited 2 vendors down for the bazaar last semester:

a) Yi Sheng Pte Ltd which specialized in the sale of accessories such as earrings and necklaces

b) Concept Shoppe which is involved in selling movies memorabilia.

The booth selling accessories enjoyed rather brisk business due to very reasonably-priced(aka cheap) items and the booth selling movies memorabilia attracted strong crowds cos "exotic" things like pendants and One Ring from LOTR are sold....

4.Matriculation Fair

ENS set up a booth for Matriculation Fair 2005 on 25th July 2005 in MPSH. Pamphlets with information of upcoming ENS activities were given out on the day itself to promote awareness of ENS and increase publicity of upcoming events among freshmen. Boards carrying photos of various ENS activities were also done up and displayed at our booth during the fair itself.

Why you should take up the challenge:You get to talk to many people due to the large number of freshmen who throng MPSH for matriculation. So this is for people who like toexpress their vocal talents(in e form of talking...for singing-wise,join project superstar instead..sorry)

5.
Decoration of ENS notice board

The ENS notice board was revamped and given an entirely new look. Photos from past events as well as information on Camp Infinite Horizon were put up to inform the general population of our activities.

Why you should take up the challenge:The best platform for you to showcase your artistic capablilites and let your creativity run absolutely wild. And you have the entire Arts Faculty population as your audience.

Sidenote:I do hope that the next committee will do a better job in improving the aesthetic aspect of the board than the current committee...hehe...

If you wish to find out more about A&M activities, drop by our welcome tea tomorrow...see you there...

You've seen short intros by Sports & Social (SNS) and NEFMQ. Now, here's a little crash course on what another committee, the Student Welfare Committee (SWC), does. The SWC is in charge of organising two main activities: the sale of suggested exam solutions and collection-and-sale of second-hand textbooks. In addition, it has just started an electronic newsletter, entitled Internships Alert!

Dunno what they are? Read on to find out...

SALE OF SUGGESTED EXAM PAPER SOLUTIONS
I’m sure many of you have encountered this before: The exams are fast approaching, and I’ve started doing past year papers, but I don’t know whether my answers are correct or not!! What to do??!! Argh!!

Don’t fret, as SWC provides suggested solutions to past semesters’ Economics exam papers! Held in the form of a sale one to two weeks before the reading period, the event is popular among NUS students, with more than 500 students purchasing the solutions every semester.

The solutions on offer are to papers of the Level – 1 and – 2 modules, namely EC1101E (Introduction to Economic Analysis), EC1301 (Principle of Economics), EC2101 (Microeconomic Analysis I), EC2102 (Macroeconomic Analysis II) and EC2303 (Foundations of Econometrics). As these modules deal with the basic foundations of Economics, it is essential that students intending to major in Economics perform well in them, and it is hoped that the solutions will help the students strengthen their foundations and boost their confidence in taking the higher-level Economics modules.

(doesn't this pic remind you of hao3 gong1 min2?)

The solutions are prepared by seniors who have scored at least As for their Economics modules and who go to great lengths to maintain the high accuracy of the solutions. For weeks before the actual sale every semester, the solutions undergo two to three rounds of checking and double-checking, and professors are even consulted on the questionable areas.

This rigorous process has ensured a very low number of errors (incl. typing errors) in the solutions, and the high level of confidence of the students in the solutions is demonstrated in the popularity of the sale every semester.

COLLECTION-AND-SALE OF SECOND-HAND TEXTBOOKS
Two main problems with textbooks are that they can be quite expensive and that after the exams, they have no more use, except collecting dust and taking up space in your bookshelf. So, imagine paying over $40 for a book that you will only use for 13 weeks but find it too expensive to throw away after the exams.

SWC has an answer to these two problems – collection-and-sale of second-hand textbooks. This is where you can buy your reading texts for a low price and where you can exchange your useless textbooks for cash!

Held within the first two weeks of school, the event has benefited over 100 buyers and sellers every semester, with more than 80 books exchanging hands over the span of just five days.

During the event, the seller deposits the book along with a suggested selling price, and SWC puts the book up for sale. When the book successfully finds a buyer, SWC passes the money to the seller, taking only a small fee to cover the administrative cost. Books that do not find a new owner will be returned to the sellers after the event.

The sale of second-hand textbooks is gaining popularity (with a few other societies organising similar events of their own) and is becoming one of the most-awaited events in the academic calendar.

INTERNSHIPS ALERT!
To raise awareness of the various internship opportunities available in the long vacation, an electronic newsletter that featured several attachment-offering organisations was started in Dec 2004. Called Internships Alert!, the inaugural edition of the newsletter was disseminated through email to all society members in mid-Jan 2005.

The edition contained basic information on attachments offered by ten organisations, which ranged from international banks to statutory boards and to a government ministry.

The newsletter had received very favourable feedback, but there was response that the information provided was still too skeletal. It is expected that the newsletter will be continued in the current academic year, with more organisations being featured and more content added.

If you wanna find out more about SWC or wanna join in SWC activities, do come down for this mon's welcome tea...

cheers,
shixin
(a.k.a. head of SWC 2004-2005)

ENS held a bazaar at the Central Forum in late Jan this year (oh! that seems eons ago!), and as a big thank-you to the people who gave us such good help during the event, they were treated to a post-event celebratory dinner @ Han’s @ Park Mall.

And boy, were we multi-national!
All are from SG, except stated otherwise.

Standing (L-R): Michael (Vietnam), Gilbert, Colin (Canada), Raem, Weiliang, Phuong (Vietnam), Eddie (the blissful-looking one), Vicky (Mauritius)
Seated (L-R): Hui Ping, Tomoko (Japan), Claire (the one with the photocopied Macro textbook), Kwee Lim, Shixin (the one with apparently two left hands)

After the dinner, we hopped over to Chinatown to soak in the CNY festivity (it was still a few days before CNY then). Our international friends were gladly introduced to some of the sights, sound and food Chinatown could offer … though we took like forever to move through the crowd. I remember when we finally found some space to breathe in, a few promoters offered us a few cups of free beer. Heh~ *Hic*

Cheers,
shixin
